A fresh NinjaTrader 8 install is a gray window with twenty menu items and no chart. Most people spend two weeks fighting settings that get solved once and never touched again. This guide gets the platform built in an afternoon: connection, charts, templates, workspaces, hotkeys and the settings that keep it from crawling three weeks in.

All of it on the free version. Nothing here requires a paid license.

Build the platform with something on the chart. Grab one of our free systems and use it to test the install, the templates and the workspace while you configure. Costs nothing and saves you setting everything up twice.

Download a free system

Download, install and first launch

Grab the installer from the official NinjaTrader site and create a free account. It is a small download and needs the Microsoft .NET package, which usually installs itself.

Three install decisions worth getting right:

  • Default path. Leave it. The platform creates Documents\NinjaTrader 8 for your data, and that folder belongs on a fast local drive, not in a cloud-synced directory. OneDrive syncing the NinjaTrader folder is a common cause of freezes.
  • Do not install to a network folder. The local database misbehaves off the machine's own disk.
  • Antivirus. Add an exclusion for the NinjaTrader folder. Aggressive antivirus scans the tick database in real time and wrecks performance.

The first launch opens the Control Center, the small window with the accounts and orders tabs. That window stays open all session. Close it and everything closes.

Connection and data: what you actually need

NinjaTrader separates two things people conflate: the data connection and the execution account. You can have data with no account (for study) and you can have a prop firm account running on the data feed that firm provides.

To start, the built-in simulator (the Sim101 account) covers everything: testing indicators, learning the platform, drilling order mechanics. NinjaTrader's free historical data is enough for that.

When you connect a funded account, the provider will be Rithmic or Tradovate depending on the firm, each with its own login and gateway. That process, with the day-one errors, is in how to connect NinjaTrader 8 to Apex.

Level 1 or Level 2 data

Level 1 is quotes and traded volume. Level 2 adds book depth. If you plan to run order flow with a footprint or DOM, you need Level 2 and it usually runs a few dollars a month per exchange. If you only use charts and volume, Level 1 is plenty.

Building the first chart properly

New > Chart in the Control Center. More gets decided here than it looks.

The right instrument

In futures you do not trade "MNQ", you trade a specific expiration: MNQ 09-26 for the September 2026 contract. Type MNQ and NinjaTrader offers the active month. It changes quarterly (March, June, September, December) and during roll days volume splits between the two contracts.

The trick that removes 90% of the hassle: use MNQ ##-## in the instrument box. That notation makes the platform always pull the active expiration, so you never wake up on a Monday staring at a dead chart.

Session: ETH or RTH

The session template menu decides which hours make it onto the chart. US Equities ETH includes the full electronic session (23 hours). US Equities RTH covers only the cash session, 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM ET.

It matters because it changes VWAP, volume profile and the day's high and low. Recommendation: ETH to see overnight context, RTH when you compute levels that depend on the cash session. Keep both saved as separate templates.

Bar type and period

Start with minutes, 1 and 5. Once you know the platform, try range or constant-volume bars, which distribute information better in futures. The full comparison is in Renko, range or tick charts.

Days to load

By default NinjaTrader loads far more days than you need. Cut it to 5 or 10 on 1-minute charts. Every extra day is hundreds of thousands of ticks in memory per chart, and with six charts open it shows.

Templates and workspaces

These two features are the difference between building the chart once and rebuilding it every morning.

Chart Template. Saves indicators, colors, scales and settings for a chart. Right click the chart, Templates > Save As, name it. After that, any new chart loads it in two clicks. Save yours as Default and every new chart is born configured.

Workspace. Saves the whole window layout: which charts, where, on which monitor, with which DOM open. Create them from Workspaces > New. Three that work well:

  • Trading: the two or three charts you actually trade plus the DOM.
  • Analysis: daily and 60-minute charts for marking levels before the open.
  • Replay: the Market Replay window and one clean chart for practice.

Workspaces save themselves on close. If you want one frozen, mark it Locked and the platform stops overwriting it with the day's changes.

Trading from the chart with Chart Trader

It is the side panel that appears with Ctrl+F11 or from the toolbar icon. From there you place orders by dragging on the chart, and you see position and open P&L.

What to configure on day one:

  • An ATM template. Sets stop and target automatically the moment you enter. Without it, every entry takes three manual actions, and in a fast move there is no time. How to build them is in NinjaTrader ATM strategies.
  • Default quantity. Set it to 1. The field remembers the last value used, which is the origin of more than one "I did not mean to send five contracts".
  • Order confirmation. Turn it on while you learn. One extra click in exchange for never selling when you meant to buy.

Platform built, next question is what to look at. Our systems ship with a chart template for MNQ and MES: load it and the chart is configured without touching twenty parameters.

Hotkeys that save you clicks

NinjaTrader lets you remap nearly everything under Tools > Hot Keys. These are the ones used daily.

ActionHotkeyWhat it is for
Show or hide Chart TraderCtrl+F11Free up space while analyzing
Close position at marketConfigurable (use F12)Exit without hunting for a button
Cancel all ordersConfigurable (use Ctrl+Del)Clear the chart in a second
Zoom in and outMouse wheelChange context without opening settings
Jump to last barEndReturn to now after scrolling history
Add horizontal lineConfigurable (use H)Mark levels fast

The close-position hotkey is the one non-negotiable. The day you need out fast you will not want to find the mouse. Put it far from the keys you use for drawing, because an accidental flatten is worse than an accidental entry.

Performance settings from day one

NinjaTrader runs fast on a fresh install and degrades as you pile on charts, data and indicators. These settings prevent it.

SettingWhere it livesRecommended value
Days to loadChart properties5 on 1-minute, 20 on 5-minute
Tick ReplayChart propertiesOnly on order flow charts
Global Simulation ModeTools > OptionsOff on a live account
Max bars in memoryTools > Options > DataLeave the default
Charts open at onceYour callUnder six per workspace

Tick Replay is the big one. It rebuilds tick by tick so order flow indicators work, and it multiplies memory usage. Enable it only where it is needed. If the platform is already dragging, the full diagnosis is in NinjaTrader 8 running slow or crashing.

Backups and the usual mistakes

Your entire configuration lives in Documents\NinjaTrader 8. Copy that folder to an external drive once a month and before any update. It is small and it restores your previous state in a minute.

The four mistakes that cost the most time early on:

One: not saving the workspace before closing. If NinjaTrader exits abnormally, the layout is gone. Save manually after building anything that took effort.

Two: loading a thousand days of history "just in case". It is the number one reason the platform takes thirty seconds to open a chart.

Three: hoarding old indicators. Every import recompiles all custom code. One three-year-old indicator that no longer compiles blocks every new install. The clean process is in how to install indicators on NinjaTrader 8.

Four: trading live with Global Simulation Mode on. You think your orders are hitting the market and they are sitting in the internal simulator. It shows in the Control Center, and it is worth checking every morning.

Give this one afternoon and you will not touch it again. Build two templates, three workspaces and four hotkeys, back up the folder, and from then on your time goes where it should: into reading the chart instead of wrestling with windows.
